Our story
Two chairs above a bookstore
Dana Whitaker opened Maple & Rye in 2014 with two chairs above a bookstore on Lexington Avenue. She had spent four years assisting in a busy Atlanta salon and wanted a place where a stylist could take the time to ask what you want, and where the price was no mystery.
In 2019 we moved to Wilder Street, added chairs, a lounge and a back room for nails and lashes, and kept the rules: say the price first, never add anything for paying by card, take walk-ins when we can, and fix it for free if you tell us within a week.
Today there are five of us. We are a licensed salon, inspected by the NC Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners, and the bookstore’s staff next door still say hello every morning.

In clients’ words

“I walked in with box-dye orange and a lot of dread. Dana laid out what it would take, what it would cost and how many visits, and she was right on all three. I have the first hair color I have loved in ten years.”

“Marcus is the first person who has ever cut my curls without making me feel like they were a problem. I left with a shape that actually works on wash day.”

“Priya did my daughter’s wedding hair and mine, and the trial meant nothing was a surprise. Everything held through a humid September afternoon and a lot of dancing.”
